Everything but the kitchen sink...

By Mick Doran  -  27 February 2017

A couple of years ago my 8 year old son Alfie discovered The Brass Academy, a residential course for brass players from 8-18 of all capabilities. To say he had fun would be an understatement! He revelled in the music making with inspirational tutors drawn from the top tier of the UK’s brass world, and loved all the sport and social activities that are such a big feature of the course.

The end of course concert was a wonderful celebration for both the exuberant kids and heart-bulgingly proud parents, not least myself! We took Alfie home on a massive high, and he even asked to sleep with his trumpet!

Fast forward a couple of equally successful brass courses, and imagine my delight when Tom Rainer, The Brass Academy’s co-founder and director, invited me to start a companion course, The Percussion Academy.

Naturally I accepted, and have spent the last months planning a course to run alongside The Brass Academy from April 3-7th 2017, open to residential and day guests at The Purcell School in Hertfordshire.

I will be leading a course that will offer players a chance to learn techniques and styles from across the world of percussion, be it timpani, tuned, orchestral, world percussion or drum kit. With my background playing with all the UK’s top orchestras, session work and passion for jazz, and of course my role as a teacher at the renowned Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, I can’t wait to share my love of music with a younger generation of players.

We will have guest tutors (generously sponsored by Yamaha), each spending a day with us and offering specialist insight into particular areas of playing. The first of these tutors is the drumming legend Steve White. I hope to be announcing other guest tutors as people sign up for the course.

The Percussion Academy will share the sprit of The Brass Academy, achieving musical excellence while having a really great, fun time.
