Since obtaining a PGDip in Jazz Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and awarded the Archers Scholarship in 2002, Jimmy has continued to study Bel canto with Colin Baldy (New College Oxford), and uses this traditional vocal technique as the foundation for his performance and teaching, later studying with Kevin Burke (John Hendriks) in New York.
Jimmy has toured and recorded with Sir Tom Jones, The Commitments, Rodriguez, Maroon Town, Roger Taylor, Mbawula, and exclusively on TV’s ‘The One Show’ and ‘This Morning’.
Performing internationally at concerts in Cyprus, Florence, Greece, Paris, Kuala lumpur, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Jordan and Dubai with his own swing band ‘The Jazz Cannons’, as well as entertaining numerous private and corporate audiences at The Ritz Club, The Savoy, The Dorchester, Claridges, Soho House, The Groucho Club, and the The Pigalle back in London.
Jimmy regularly appears in his own right at London’s Jazz clubs, such as Ronnie Scott’s and the 606.. For nearly five years, his big band had a monthly residency at the Bulls Head in Barnes in south London, and he continues to tour the UK and Europe with his own quartet.
Jimmy’s recent projects include ‘Burton Bradstock’, a Jazz/Folk group, which seeks to generate a widespread renaissance in the traditional English song, ‘The Best of British Song’ showcasing songs written by British composers from the 1920s right up until the late 1960s.
Described by Jack Massarik, Evening Standard as a “stylistic vocalist with fantastic in-person delivery” and “All heart, All soul, All music” by the legendary Mark Murphy, Jimmy has released two albums to date: ‘Alltogether’ through Proper Music and ‘All Upon a Lovely Summer's’ Day’ through the British Jazz label F-IRE. “A Jazz cousin of Fairport Convention’s folk-rock classic ‘Liege and lief’” – Jazzwise
Within his various ensembles he explores various styles of singing including Jazz, Folk, Pop and the Anglo American resurgence, which he encourages his students to explore, believing that a rounded education and an understanding of stylistic fusion leads to individuality.
A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Jimmy is a strong advocate for music education and since 2007 has been the module leader for vocal performance on the BMus degree course at London College of Creative Media (LCCM), and is honoured to have recently joined the vocal department at Westminster University.
As session singer, Jimmy has recorded for Carlsberg, Bupa, Aardman films, Mcasso Music, Roger Taylor, and continues to write and arrange songs with other artistes and producers, including most recently producer and arranger Sean Hargreaves at Tileyard Music.
Jimmy’s strengths are in vocal technique and jazz improvisation.
