Principal Viola of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and London Chamber Orchestra, Joel has over 20 years experience as a principal violist working in major orchestras across Europe whilst also performing chamber music all over the world with many different ensembles
After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 1997 he was appointed Co-principal viola of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow. From 2006 - 2013 he held the post of Principal Viola in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under music director, Daniel Harding.
He has appeared as Principal Viola in most UK orchestras including the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Internationally he regularly accepts invitations from the Symphonie Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Oslo and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Joel plays regularly in the Lucerne Festival Orchestra during the summer which sadly recently lost its founder and chief conductor Claudio Abbado.
Currently he holds Principal positions in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra working extensively throughout Europe and in the UK with the London Chamber Orchestra with whom he also performed as a soloist in 2010 at St.Johns Smith Square, London.
Alongside these commitments he also finds time and very much enjoys working in the studio orchestras of London, recording scores for film and television.
As a chamber musician Joel has performed with many eminent artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Augustin Dumay, Piers Lane, Christian Tetzlaff, Alisa Weilerstein, Pascal Roge and Leif Ove Andsnes in concerts throughout the world and has performed at international festivals including the Mecklenburg Vorpommern Festival with the Kungsbacker String Trio and in the U.S.A at the Charlottesville
International Chamber Music Festival.
Passionate about early music, Joel plays with Musica Saeculorum, a period instrument ensemble in Italy and has worked with the Kings Consort and Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique in the UK'
Joel is a member of the Logos Chamber Group led by Andrew Haveron and resident in Hong Kong for the International Piano Competition and Joy Of Music Festival.
As a teacher Joel has coached and taught at many institutions throughout Europe and especially enjoys working with youth orchestras. He has coached the violas of the World Youth Orchestra and in 2013 was appointed visiting professor at the Gustav Mahler Summer Academy in Bolzano, Italy.
In 2001 he was made an ʻAssociateʼ of the Royal Academy of Music in London (ARAM) for his services to the profession.
