About Robin Browning

Robin Browning is an established conductor, performer and music-educator. Praised as an “expert musician & conductor” by Sir Charles Mackerras, he is a passionate advocate for music and for the arts in general.

In previous seasons he has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hallé, and the Royal Northern Sinfonia, whilst his conducting work abroad has taken him to the St Petersburg Festival Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Boise Philharmonic – making his US debut with them in 2011.

Recent UK guest appearances have included performances with Milton Keynes City Orchestra, Oxford University Orchestra and Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra in London.

Robin is Artistic Director of són, Southampton's new professional orchestra – one of a fresh breed of innovative chamber orchestras. He is Music Director of de Havilland Philharmonic, Essex Youth Orchestra and Havant Chamber Orchestra.

He recently assisted Paavo Järvi on his Nielsen Symphony Cycle with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Sakari Oramo for the UK premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Violin Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Robin has worked with soloists such as Guy Johnston, John Lill, Craig Ogden, Jennifer Pike and Raphael Wallfisch, and performed on the stages of some of the world's most famous concert halls including Snape Maltings, London’s Cadogan Hall, the Rudolfinum in Prague, and at the Olympic Stadium, Nanjing – conducting live on Chinese television to an audience of 70 million.

No stranger to the recording studio, Robin has released four albums, including a collaboration with Seamus Heaney and Raymond Warren, and many world premieres: all are available on iTunes and Amazon.

Robin is not only an established performer, but also a widely-respected conducting teacher, coach and mentor. As professor of conducting at the University of Southampton – one of the UK's top university music departments – he has nurtured the careers of the younger generation of conductors for over 10 years, seeing many of his students successfully enter the profession and win places for conservatoire-level study.

Having studied with Sir Charles Mackerras, Sian Edwards, and Sir Mark Elder, and taken masterclasses with Ilya Musin, Neeme Järvi and Myung-Whun Chung, Robin is dedicated to passing on this knowledge to others. As part of his comprehensive and inspiring approach, Robin works intensively with student conductors on the core issues facing the modern conductor, in particular their technical-grounding, score-preparation and interpretative choices. Development of these key areas is coupled with detailed video-analysis, a meticulous dissection of rehearsal planning and style, and a probing scrutiny of their rhythmical stability, harmonic awareness, and the formal structure of all repertoire studied.

Robin is a committed proponent of conductor-training, and believes passionately in advancing the teaching of conductors everywhere across the globe.
